At the July 14, 2005 School Board meeting, Superintendent Kevin Castner reported that our 2005 graduates made huge gains in the number of Advanced Studies Diplomas awarded this past June. The rate jumped to 70% in Albemarle County's Class of 2005 as compared to 53% two years ago. Advanced Studies diplomas require 24 total credits (9 verified by tests) and this includes 3 years of a foreign language or 2 years each of 2 different languages.
No Albemarle County seniors participated in Project Graduation because 100% of our students received verified credits by passing their reading and writing SOL.
Dr. Castner observed that this is solid evidence that the SOL tests are not driving us towards mediocrity in public education. We also have increasing enrollment in dual enrollment and advanced placement courses, another indication of more rigorous coursework. Brian
